The Whitehill & Bordon Regeneration Company has sadly confirmed that football won’t be coming home to the big screen at Parade Square tonight.
But they’re convinced tonight’s showing of the Euro2024 final between England and Spain at The Shed will be a winner with a big screen and pre-match DJ.
They’re also keen to bolster trade for other venues around town with the likes of BOSC and the Forest Community Centre showing the big match.
Calls to screen the match at Parade Square were made shortly after the Three Lions defeated The Netherlands to reach tonight’s showpiece in Berlin.
Although there was much “deliberation and liaison with local authorities” it was ruled out on safety grounds as the WBRC couldn’t guarantee meeting police and fire measures given the relatively short timescale.
A spokesperson said: “Hosting an event of this scale also requires meticulous planning and coordination with local authorities to ensure all safety protocols and thoroughly implemented.
“In this case we could not guarantee the level of safety our community deserves.”
The WBRC has highlighted the efforts made locally by pubs, clubs, the Forest Community Centre and BOSC to create the “perfect viewing experience” for the final.
They’re also determined to create an incredible match atmosphere in The Shed with a big screen and pre-match DJ, with entry offered on a first come, first served basis.
