The Farnham & District Sunday Veterans League over-60s representative side will play against England over-60s.
The match will take place at Alton Football Club’s Anstey Park Enclosure ground at 2pm on Sunday, September 22, and will raise money for the King’s Arms youth charity based in Alton and Petersfield.
All players involved on the day will pay a match fee. A raffle will be held and collections buckets will be at the entrance and throughout the stadium for those who wish to make a contribution.
Among the Farnham playing squad which is drawn from the local area are Pete Browning, Roger Steer, Gwynne Berry and Dave Hawtin.
Browning played and managed Farnham Town in the 80s and 90s and, along with team-mates John Regan and Dave Lazell, currently represents the England over-60s side.
Steer will be familiar to many local football fans having been involved in some of the biggest non-league clubs in the area during his long and still flourishing career. He is still dictating games at 70 years of age.
Berry played at Woking for Geoff Chapple and has an FA Trophy medal from one of the Cardinals’ Wembley appearances.
Hawtin is currently director of football at Alton Football Club and has played for Alton, Farnham, Basingstoke and Farnborough.
The Farnham squad was the initiative of Browning and was put together in the autumn of 2023 to compete in the 2023-24 FA national over-60s football competition.
Farnham were grouped with Oxfordshire, Kent and East Sussex, and won their group with 16 points out of a possible 18 after winning five games and drawing one. The Farnham team scored 16 goals and only conceded four goals.
Farnham will host Worcester in the quarter-finals of the national competition at Alton Football Club’s Anstey Park Enclosure ground at 2pm on Sunday, October 13.
