Alton’s fourth team secured a winning draw against Kingsley in Division Five of the I’Anson League on Saturday.

The Brewers were asked to bat first and built their total around the excellent strokeplay of Ian Mason (94). The innings appeared to be faltering at 68 for three, before Jamie Craig (50) and Mason added 97 for the fourth wicket. Alton declared on 187 for nine after 42 overs.

Kingsley’s batters struggled against opening bowlers Alexander Stratford (two for 17) and Jon Porter. Sam Francis (41) and Oli Cooper (42 not out) produced a good partnership, but the visitors lost wickets at regular intervals and finished on 166 for nine after 38 overs.

Alton’s women fell to a 70-run defeat against St Cross Symondians on Sunday.

Alton elected to bowl first, but opening bowlers Josie Morris and Mel Vaggers were dispatched to all parts of the ground by Avoth (25) and Whybrow (39). Avoth fell to the bowling of Alton skipper Jorja Wright, caught by Nic Gadsby.

Whybrow was one of a pair of wickets for Porter, and it was the combination of Porter and Wright that slowed the visitors’ rate. Overseas player Frankie Nicklin (101 not out) scored a superb century to steer the visitors to a formidable 279 for nine off their 40 overs.

Julia Moulton (29) slowly built the Alton response before Abi Green (25) and Gemma Porter (92) took the attack to the visitors. Morris (20 not out) took Alton past 200 to secure maximum batting points, as the hosts scored 209 for seven.
