Butser Ancient Farm is hosting two pop-up cinema weekends at which people will be able to have an incredible cinema experience in the most unusual surroundings.

They will be from August 25 to 27 and October 20 to 22. Films for the first weekend have been announced and will start on August 25 at 6.30pm with The Nettle Dress (2022), which follows textile artist Allan Brown as he spends seven years making a dress by hand from the fibre of locally foraged stinging nettles. Tickets cost £18.

On August 26 at 6.30pm Butser will screen Beowulf (2007), a cinematic adaptation of the ancient epic poem. After destroying the overpowering demon Grendel, Beowulf incurs the undying wrath of the beast’s ruthlessly seductive mother who will use any means possible to ensure revenge. Tickets cost £18.

A family favourite filmed at the farm, Horrible Histories: The Movie – Rotten Romans (2019), will be shown on August 27 at 6pm. A rag-tag band of rotten Romans and cut-throat Celts will provide entertainment and insight into ancient life. Atti, a smart and quick-witted Roman teenager, upsets Emperor Nero and is sent to work in cold, wet Britain. Tickets cost £18 for adults and £10 for children.

Events co-ordinator Kristin Devey said: “We have chosen films for their entertainment value as well as a connection to the farm itself.”
