Police have confirmed an investigation has been launched following a suspected arson at a wildlife haven in Bordon.

There has been anger around the town and the Oxney Quarter after the ‘Bat Hotel’ was reportedly set alight last Friday evening.

The finger has been pointed at youths seen in the area at the time with police appealing for CCTV and doorbell footage following the blaze around 4.30pm.

The small structure was home to hundreds of bats – including some protected species – with some suspected of dying in the evening fire.

Andy Tree, leader of Whitehill Town Council, said the incident has rightly upset law-abiding residents.

He said: “What an incredibly disappointing and appalling act of criminal damage and harm.

“I hope the police will take action and I will keep in contact with them on this matter.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Police said enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

Witnesses or anyone with information should call 101.
