Liss Runners’ annual club championship race – Trevor’s Challenge – was held in memory of club founder Trevor Stothard.
Trevor’s wife Margaret was invited to attend and she started this year’s race in his memory and awarded trophies at the end of the run.
The annual club photo was taken at Newman Collard, before the race started at the old railway line by Riverside Walk.
After a very muddy and puddly start along Riverside Walk, the 3.8-mile route went on to Forest Road and went past the Temple Inn pub, turning into Mint Road and going along Rake Road before finishing near the Triangle Centre. The newly-crowned ladies’ club champion was Catherine Seagar. The new men’s club champion is new member Chris Dettmar.
Robin Greenfield, Michelle Fox-Reynolds and Louise Bevan took care of the timekeeping, while Tom Frost put up the signage around the course. Toby Clay, Laura Armstrong and Ethan Armstrong took photos, and Will Purchase provided vocal support for the runners.
The Trevor’s Challenge club championship race also doubles up as the club’s first race of the handicap series. The times set on this run are used to determine everyone’s starting positions for the next run in May.
In the Hampshire Road Race League (HRRL), Liss Runners’ ladies’ team currently sit in mid-table in Division A1. Seagar is in second place in the women’s standings. The men’s team are in sixth place in Division A2. Men’s club captain Steve Armstrong is in tenth place in the men’s individual table, and achieved a personal best time of 1:03.48 in the recent HRRL Salisbury ten-mile road race. Liss’ ladies’ came second overall in Division A1 at Salisbury, and the men’s team came sixth in Division A2. The next HRRL race is the Alton ten-mile race on Sunday, May 12.
