ALICE Plumb of Dorset won the 26th Liphook Scratch Cup on Saturday and set a new course record for the prestigious women’s tournament.
The 22-year-old, from Sherborne Golf Club, was playing Liphook for the first time, but shot a level-par 72 in the morning and in the afternoon took the course apart with a record 66 for a 36-hole total of 138 – four shots clear of the field.
Her front nine included four birdies and two bogeys and she added four more birdies on the inward nine.
The Scratch Cup record was previously held by Rachel Drummond who recorded a 67 in 2009.
Alice Plumb, who plays off +1, took up golf when was eight. Previously at Yeovil and now at Sherborne, she has been a stalwart of the Dorset County team for several years.
She attended university in Florida before returning home to work on her game with her coach at Sherborne where she works in the professional’s shop when not on the practice range. She plans to attend qualifying school this autumn.
Her 18-year-old brother, Tom, is also no mean Sherborne golfer and is currently fourth in the England Boys Order of Merit and 16th on the men’s equivalent, playing off +2.8. They make a formidable foursomes partnership.
Conditions were perfect at Liphook Golf Club. After a heavy overnight dew, the day warmed up and the greens became faster, unlike the pace of play, with rounds taking no less than four hours.
Four shots back with a 36-hole total of 142 were Cornwall county team-mates Georgia Price (Bude & North Cornwall), playing off +3, and Emily Toy (Carlyon Bay), +2.
Amelia Williamson (Cromer), +3, came fourth on 143 and in fifth place was Waterlooville’s Kerry Smith, +2, with 145.
