Tilford pulled off a remarkable win at the Green against Grayswood by one wicket in Division One of the I’Anson Cricket League on Saturday.
The home side won the toss and put the visitors into bat first. Tilford made early inroads as they restricted Grayswood to 42 for three after 13 overs on a bowler-friendly wicket. Ben Jeffrey and Ali Gloak then added 41 runs before Jeffrey fell leg before wicket for 21. After this, Gloak held the innings together before holing out for 37, made off 74 balls. The innings closed on 156 in the 45th over with Huw Town-Jones ending with three for 19 and two wickets each for George Ellis and Nigel Martyn.
The Tilford reply began badly as three wickets fell for 21 before Henry Clinton (28) and Matthew Cook put on 39 runs before both batters were out with the score on 60. Ellis made 20 but wickets continued to fall as the total reached 96 for eight. Denis Hounsham and Ben Matthews then gradually turned fortunes around as with a mixture of defence and attacking shots they put on 48 before Hounsham was bowled for 18 with just 13 needed to win.
Last man Martyn scored a boundary through the slip cordon to bring the scores level and then in the next over Matthews (29 not out) pulled the winning shot to the leg side boundary. For Grayswood, Iain Jackson took three for 34 with Henry Hind and Eric Anand taking two wickets each.
