Petersfield’s first team slipped to a narrow one-wicket defeat at Longparish in Division Two of the Hampshire Cricket League on Saturday.
Petersfield lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Henry Shore and Adam De Swardt started well. The opening pair saw off the new ball and put any bad ball away. De Swardt was caught for a well made 38 and Shore was caught for 40 in the next over.
James Walton and Will Shore started to build a partnership before W Shore was caught for 14. Walton was then caught behind for 36 after hitting the ball into his ankle.
Petersfield lost more wickets before a handy partnership from Chris Russell (12 not out) and Rich Stephens (ten) enabled the visitors to finish on 176 for nine and post a competitive score.
Petersfield needed to start well in the field, and Oscar Maclean took an early wicket. Some dropped catches allowed the Longparish middle order to get in, and the hosts needed 20 off ten overs for victory.
Excellent bowling from Russell, who bowled superbly to pick up figures of five for 40, set up a tight finish. Longparish needed one run from the last two balls, which they managed to get.
Petersfield’s second team beat Compton by three wickets on Saturday in Division Five South East of the Hampshire Cricket League.
Tom Horwood (three for 23) was the pick of the Petersfield attack as Compton scored 155 for nine off their allotted 40 overs. Ned Kelly (36), Steve Gibson (25), James Longland (23) and Adam Childs (22) all made vital contributions with the bat as Petersfield knocked the runs off in 38 overs.
Petersfield’s third team fell to a 72-run defeat against Cove’s fourth team on Saturday in Division Six North East of the Hampshire Cricket League.
