Well-maintained roads are a basic expectation - ones that are safe for driving, cycling, and walking, and free from the constant nuisance of potholes and poor surfaces.
It’s not an unreasonable ask to have good-quality roads, and I completely agree when residents across Farnham, Bordon, Haslemere, and Liphook have told me they’re fed up with crumbling roads and cracked pavements.
For example, Petworth Road, the Long Road and Longmoor Road remain persistent problems, while the continuing congestion in Farnham is a recurring frustration.
These issues aren’t going away on their own. Local highways teams are working hard, but they’re being held back.
While Labour boasts about extra funding for road repairs, their mixed messages and short-term fixes leave councils battling red tape instead of tackling the real problem.
Just this week, the Government announced councils must report the number of potholes filled to unlock more funding. Transparency is important, but this is yet another policy that offers little real support.
This is why I’ve written to ministers demanding clarity on the future of Network North and what it means for our counties, like in Hampshire.
Redirecting HS2 money into local transport is the right idea - but our communities need guarantees that this funding will actually reach them - no more uncertainty, no more delays.
At the same time, I want you to have a say in the future of our transport network.
In Farnham, I’m launching a survey, delivered to some homes and available online, so residents can share their views on everything from local buses to major projects like the Wrecclesham bypass.
If there’s a road, footpath, or transport issue you want to raise, get in touch or take part in my survey. Let’s fight for the investment our communities deserve.
