NOVEMBER is a bit late for a spring clean but Petersfield was definitely looking tidier for Remembrance weekend.

That was all down to a team of volunteers and a Liphook firm with dozens of people coming together to give Petersfield its annual “Clean-up for Remembrance”.

Around 30 people signed up to the Petersfield Society scheme while a team from Arthur J. Gallagher made the journey down the A3 last Tuesday for a spot of “town centre gardening”.

Some neglected corners were given a much-needed makeover with litter picking, weed removal and drain clearing around the likes of Swan Street car park, Hobbs Lane, Dragon Street, Folly Lane and land around the telephone exchange.

Petersfield mayor Cllr JC Crissey praised their “amazing work” and said it was a privilege to work alongside the “wonderful people” while joining the clean-up effort.

He said: “This hearty team collected dozens of bags of litter, weeds and other nasties in some very difficult places.

“This is the third time these two organisations have teamed up to help tidy our town, efforts that have my sincerest thanks.”

The aim of the clean was to get the town’s overgrown spaces looking good for Armistice Day and the colder months as weeds and empty planters look even more depressing on a winter’s day.

District council workers also cleared weeds around the High Street and The Square with most of the town tidied up and cleared of litter before Sunday morning.

Volunteers wearing hi-vis jackets were assigned parts of the town in a bid to give Petersfield a “deep clean” with areas afar as Bedford Road, The Causeway, Tilmore Gardens and Pulens Lane all being targeted.

The annual clean-up also follows the launch of a “Spruce Up Your Shop Front” campaign by the Petersfield Society which encourages traders to keep the area in front of their business free of dust and litter.

Hectors, Hoxton Bakehouse and Latin-Arabic eatery Cantina Rosita have all taken part with “exceptional citizens” at the latter going one better and giving much of Folly Lane a once-over with weeds and litter being removed and borders tidied up.
