GREATHAM Primary School pupils triumphed in basketball at the recent Hampshire School Games.

More than 3,000 youngsters joined Energise Me at the Hampshire School Games on Thursday, June 21, and Friday, June 22.

The event took place at the Aldershot military base, where the facilities gave young people, from across the county, the chance to display their talents.

A year-six, mixed-sex team from Greatham Primary School (pictured) saw off competition to become the Hampshire champion for basketball.

Headteacher Jo Goman told the Herald that “rather excitingly” the children had taken top spot and described herself as “a very proud headteacher”.

The School Games is an inclusive competition, for years three to 10, with a sport for everyone, whatever their ability. Building on the legacy of the Olympics, the event is designed to ensure that every school and every child can thrive in school sport.

It aims to motivate and inspire more young people to participate. Each day of the games began with an opening ceremony and inspiring speech from European 5,000-metre bronze medallist and two-times Olympian Steph Twell.

Sharon Robertson, strategic lead for children and young people at Energise Me, said: “It was great to see so many young people participating in such a range of sports and enjoying being physically active. This year’s teams demonstrated the School Games’ values of determination, passion, respect, honesty, self belief and teamwork. We are looking forward to inspiring more young people at next year’s event.”
