PETERSFIELD’S signal box has not reached the end of the line as plans to demolish the building have been scrapped.
Representatives from Network Rail revealed last week that the Grade II listed structure is being retained.
The organisation is now planning to refurbish and convert the 138-year-old building off Station Road into a training facility.
“It will now be kept for training,” said Bob Cunningham, senior construction manager, to Petersfield Town Council last Thursday.
“An outside party was looking at it but it’s too close to the railway. It’s iconic to the people of Petersfield and it will now be kept as a training facility and it will be looked after by Network Rail.”
