A new exhibition at Haslemere Museum sees Georgian watercolours of Haslemere sitting alongside images captured between then and the present day – offering a fascinating record of how some of the local buildings have altered over time.
Entitled Images of Haslemere: Georgian Watercolours by John and Edward Hassell, the exhibition displays paintings by the father and son that have not been exhibited before.
John and Edward Hassell were well regarded artists in their time and both exhibited work at the Royal Academy.
Between 1820 and 1833, they produced more than 2,000 images of Surrey, many of which were published in travel memoirs and local history guides, which had become fashionable during the Georgian era.
Their watercolours show a picturesque view of Surrey before the age of the railway.
The exhibition is on until December 23 at Haslemere Museum, open Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10am to 4.30pm.
