ONE OF the UK’s biggest supermarkets is playing a waiting game amid questions about its role in Bordon.

Morrisons has finally got a foothold in the town having acquired the McColls convenience estate. The branch in the Forest Centre is currently being refitted and is due to reopen this Friday as a Morrisons Local.

The revamp has invariably raised questions over whether the retailer is downsizing its presence in Whitehill and Bordon as it’s expected to open a superstore in the town centre.

That development still appears to be happening, but it’s all dependent on the Whitehill and Bordon Regeneration Company developing the plot.

“We have an agreement in place with them (WBRC) to take a lease once they have redeveloped the site and built the new store,” said a spokesperson for Morrisons.

“We are currently in discussions with them about their programme of works and seeking confirmation of their proposed timeline.” 

Councillor Andy Tree, leader of the Whitehill & Bordon Community Party, told the Herald that he understands that Morrisons remain keen.

He added: “I understand the key now is investors actually paying to finish building, not Morrisons’ own desire to come.”

The town, district and county councillor concluded: “Nobody told me this isn’t happening.”
