The MOD has confirmed “a select group” of Afghans who endangered themselves to help the UK Armed Forces in their homeland are to be temporarily housed on a Bordon estate.
Around 50 vacant MOD properties around Trenchard Park will be used as transitional accommodation for at least 18 months.
The MOD has stressed no-one has been evicted to make way for the Afghans and the homes will be returned to the organisation afterwards.
A contractor will provide language, education and wellbeing support while the Afghans will also receive “cultural training” to help them get accustomed to British life.
A military team will provide safeguarding with residents being urged to welcome and demonstrate Whitehill & Bordon’s community spirit to the newcomers.
“These families have helped us and our Armed Forces and we owe them a debt of gratitude,” said a spokesperson.
“They may be nervous or worried about relocating to a new country and your welcome and kindness will make all the difference as they settle.”
