There was a lot of happiness in Headley as some of the village’s greenest residents were congratulated for dishing the dirt in a parish first.
There was plenty to dig on October 17 as Headley Harish Council (HPC) held its first-ever Allotment Awards.
The event was held to recognise the dedication and hard work of plot-holders with the awards being presented during the Annual General Meeting of the Headley Allotment Holders Association.
The certificates were presented by HPC chairman, Cllr Anthony Williams with Barry Ford winning the Best Plot award and Patrick and Teresa Murphy claiming the Best Newcomer title.
An award for Most Improved Plot was also handed out during the celebratory event.
“The event was a fantastic opportunity to shine a spotlight on the efforts of the local gardening community of the parish,” said an HPC spokesperson.
“The parish council also looks forward to seeing what the 2025 growing season will bring as the allotment community continues to thrive.”
More developments are in the pipeline at the Liphook Road site as HPC has agreed to spend £338.54 on a “deep water” sign and lifebuoy station by the balancing pond, with the allotment association agreeing to contribute towards the cost.
And it’s not just the parish’s green-finger contingent who will be getting awards in 2025, as the parish council agreed at their October meeting to launch a “Headley Hero” award to present at their Annual Parish Meeting.
A survey will be launched to allow residents to propose and vote.
