Generally speaking, footballers can’t act and actors can’t play football – yet somehow Escape To Victory is a great film!

This 1981 classic, showing at The Phoenix Theatre and Arts Centre in Bordon on November 24 at 7.30pm, brings together the unlikely combination of Michael Caine, Sylvester Stallone and Pelé – plus future Portsmouth left-winger Kevin O’Callaghan playing in goal.

Set in occupied France, the plot centres around what starts as a morale-boosting kickabout in a German prisoner of war camp but is escalated by the Third Reich propaganda machine into a Nazis v Allies prestige match at Stade de Colombes, which hosted the 1938 World Cup Final.

Head of the camp Karl von Steiner, played by Max von Sydow, is uncomfortable with how his idea has been hijacked, even more so when rough play and biased refereeing send the Nazi side in at half-time with a big lead.

At this point Stallone, who has taken over between the sticks as part of an escape plan, and his team-mates are meant to disappear – but the pride of veteran British Allied captain John Colby, played by Caine, and the desire for justice of a battered Pelé produce a thrilling comeback, a dramatic climax and a happy ending.

The £8 ticket price (£7 concessions/members) includes a pint of lager and a packet of crisps.
