THE 92-YEAR-OLD father of a much-missed Post and Herald reporter has signed-up to a fundraising abseil in his son’s memory.

Jon Walker always had the time to support and promote good causes in Petersfield like Fitzroy OnTrack.

So his dad, Peter, hopes readers will make a donation in his legacy when he abseils down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth on August 19.

Few people in Petersfield will be unaware that the “legendary” Post reporter died following a short illness in March.

Jon was a Petersfield man through-and-through who served the town for several decades. He was renowned for his exceptional dedication to the community and was a member and supporter of numerous clubs and organisations.

Groups like Fitzroy were very much on Jon’s radar so his father was determined to help the Hylton Road charity in his name, even though he’s partially disabled and needed his doctor’s approval.

He said: “My son Jon was a legend because he loved Petersfield and its people and worked hard for them. For me, he is an inspiration.

“I am self-sponsoring an abseil from the Spinnaker Tower to raise funds for – and to raise the profile of – Fitzroy.

“I think the name does not mean as much as the people it deserves. The staff there carry out with compassion and expertise a very challenging job in caring for the disabled – some extremely so.

“I know Jon would have been interested in such a cause.”

Fitzroy provides a range of services for adults with learning disability, autism and similar conditions. Their OnTrack service offers day and community support for adults, giving them a safe, relaxed and friendly environment to socialise and learn a variety of skills.
