Farnham has celebrated 30 years of friendship with its German twin town of Andernach.

Andernach is a picturesque town on the banks of the river Rhine. Ever year residents from one of the two towns visit the other and enjoy a programme of culture and activities in the surrounding area.

This year it was the turn of Farnham’s town twinning club members to spend a few days in Andernach.

The group consisted of 22 people, including Farnham deputy mayor Brodie Mauluka.

Andernach is known as the ‘edible town’ because of the free fruit and vegetables grown for the benefit of residents.

The trip this year included a visit to the Permakultur, a large eco-friendly area, and a wine tasting took place in its grounds.

There was also a guided tour of the town and a visit to the nearby famous monastery of Maria Laach, as well as some meals in local restaurants. 

Some enterprising members of the British contingent even enjoyed a cycle ride along the river Rhine to nearby Koblenz.

The chair of Farnham Andernach Friendship Association, FAFA, Nikki Gilbert, said: “It was a wonderful trip and many new friendships were formed between the German hosts and ourselves.

“The Andernach folk were particularly astonished and delighted when Brodie, our deputy mayor, suddenly appeared with his guitar and performed for us at the formal welcome ceremony.”

Membership of FAFA is open to anyone living in the Farnham area.
