The Bordon Soap Box Derby will be heading down Chalet Hill for the first time in 11 years on Sunday.

The event starts with a car show on the Parade Square from 9am, with the morning kart racing session beginning at 10.30am.

At 11am the crowd will get the first of six hourly chances to hear the sound of a Formula 1 car's revving engine, and at midday there will be live music in the Town Park by The Shed.

Following an hour-long lunch break at 12.30pm, racing resumes with the afternoon karting session at 1.30pm.

A fairground will open in Jubilee Park at 3pm and the final race starts at 3.30pm, followed by the awards ceremony.

The after-party kicks off at The Shed at 4pm, with live bands and DJ sets keeping the fun going until the event closes at 10pm.

The racers will take on a longer track than in previous Bordon events, which features five exciting new jumps and a slalom section.

There is a field of 24 karts – three in the Pro Kart category for which building costs were £500 or more, and 21 in the Everyone Kart class which cost less than £500 to put together.

The competitors are Mildren Construction, Peter David Mercer and James Fry (Pro Kart), and James Child, David Preece, Rob Harris, Phillip Evans, Nik Watts, Kevin Rooney, Geoff Gilbert, Barry Parker, Stuart, Gordon, Wayne Vessey, Ingrid Collins, Hugo Reeve, Clare Sebo, Carla Cass, John and Fiona Ryland, Robert Bennett, Alex Watts, Graeme Collings, Sophie Jackson and Nicholas Byrne (Everyone Kart).

The Formula 1 car on show will be a Hesketh 308E built by the Hesketh Racing team in 1977.

Designed by Frank Dernie and Nigel Stroud, with an aluminium monocoque chassis built around a Cosworth DFV engine and a Hewland gearbox, it was the last car built by the team before it folded at the end of 1978.

In 1977 the car was sponsored by a combination of the adult magazine Penthouse and the cigarette paper company Rizla. Driver Rupert Keegan qualified it for every race entered and achieved a best finish of seventh at the Austrian grand prix.

Others who drove the 308E in grand prix races were Eddie Cheever, Derek Daly, Hector Rebaque and Divina Galica – a female Formula 1 driver who was previously an Olympic skier.

"Did someone say supercar? Yes, that's right, we will be having some fantastic cars on display right in the heart of Bordon, including the Formula 1 car, a Metro 6R4 and a GTD R42.

"This fantastic community event is designed to bring everyone together for a great day out. All the profits will be going to Help for Heroes and four other local charities.

"The stalls are prepped, the DJs have got their tunes ready, the beer tent is fully stocked and the bands at The Shed are warming up! It's nearly here and we can't wait!"
