A statement released by Hampshire Constabulary at 10.59am on Saturday said: "We have been advised that the device has now been successfully detonated.
"We would like to thank everyone for their patience as our partners and the police dealt with this incident.
"We appreciate these things cause a bit of concern and disturbance, but the safety of the public is always our priority."
A 200-metre radius exclusion zone around the bomb was not extended to 1,500 metres during the detonation, meaning only the 16 people living within 200 metres had to evacuate their homes.
They were accommodated on Friday night at the Forest Community Centre. Members of Hampshire County Council’s Major Incident Support Team brought bedding, food, water and other supplies, and stayed with them until the incident was over.
